Fall Colors, Composting, Climate Literacy Guide

For Friday, Oct. 18, 2024

1 – Fall colors are on display in the Saginaw Bay region.

Pure Michigan, the state’s travel and tourism campaign, says peak color for our region is expected from Oct. 20-26.

Suggested things to do this fall in the area include a trip to Dow Gardens in Midland, the Frankenmuth Aerial Park and the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge in Saginaw County.

Also on the list: the Chippewa Nature Center in Midland, the Bay City State Park and Dahlia Hill in Midland.

2 – Composting yard waste is an easy and effective way to fight climate change while enhancing your garden with nutrient-rich soil.

The state’s environmental agency encourages residents to compost at home, schedule pick-up services or use commercial drop-off locations.

Officials say all you need to compost are some basic gardening tools.

Compost bins can be built with inexpensive materials.

And one inch of soil from your yard or garden has all the ingredients needed to start the composting process.

More info is online at Michigan.gov/egleCompost.

3 – Are you climate literate?

A climate literate person understands essential principles of Earth’s climate system. They understand options to address human-caused climate change. They also recognize credible information about climate change and know where to find it.

That’s according to a new edition of a climate literacy guide from the U.S. Global Change Research Program.

The guide provides information from federal scientists and educators on Earth’s climate, the impacts of climate change, and solutions.

You can find the 2024 climate literacy guide online at climate.gov.
