Lamprey Control, Whitefish Grow, Summer Ice

For Friday, June 13, 2025

1 – Sea lamprey control is planned for a Lake Huron tributary.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to apply lampricides to the Cass River in Tuscola and Saginaw counties between June 17 and 26, weather-permitting.

The work is to kill sea lamprey larvae burrowed in the stream bottom.

Sea lamprey larvae live in hundreds of Great Lakes tributaries and transform to parasites that kill fish by feeding on their blood and body fluids.

Officials say failure to kill sea lamprey larvae in streams would result in significant damage to the Great Lakes fishery. Infested tributaries must be treated on a regular basis with lampricides to control sea lamprey populations.

As with any pesticide, the public is advised to use discretion and minimize unnecessary exposure. Agricultural irrigation must be suspended for 24 hours, during and following treatment.

2 – Pinconning-based Serafin Fish Co. has been issued a commercial fishing license for lake whitefish in southern Lake Huron from the port of Harbor Beach.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says the license mirrors a research permit issued to a previous company from 2015 through 2022.

During the research period, state personnel monitored and evaluated whitefish populations, and determined the long-term potential of a sustainable and profitable commercial fishery in the area.

Officials say those efforts demonstrated the sustainability of managing a whitefish fishery out of the Harbor Beach.

The new license allows up to 10 large mesh trap nets for lake whitefish and other legal commercial fish species. The nets will be marked so boaters and anglers steer clear.

3 – It’s that time of year. University researchers want to know how you feel about ice.

All kidding aside, graduate students from the University of Michigan are conducting a survey to understand how Great Lakes communities and individuals are affected by ice cover.

The online survey takes about five minutes and responses are confidential. The work is being conducted in cooperation with the Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research and the Great Lakes Observing System.
