Coastal Cleanup, Massive Carp, Wildfire Alerts

For Friday, Aug. 22, 2025

1 – At least 30 beach cleanups are planned in Michigan next month.

According to organizers from the Alliance for the Great Lakes, volunteers from across the region will be busy on Saturday, September 20, for a Great Lakes Day of Action.

Hundreds of Adopt-a-Beach volunteers will clean and celebrate Great Lakes shorelines as part of the International Coastal Cleanup

Besides picking up litter and trash, Adopt-a-Beach volunteers also participate in citizen science, helping catalog what’s collected from beaches.

Thankfully, the massive grass carp was found on the Canadian side of the lake, in southern Ontario.

According to InsideHalton, the fish also was dying and floating when it was spotted by an angler.

A Canadian agency official says it was a sterile female grass carp, so it can’t reproduce.

Since 2012, at least 34 of the invasive carp have been collected in Canadian waters of the Great Lakes.

Officials say there’s no evidence of an established population of invasive carp in the Great Lakes, but monitoring and control efforts continue in Canada and the United States.

3 – With wildfire smoke drifting in from Canada, this summer in Michigan is shaping up to rival 2023 in terms of the number of days with air quality advisories and alerts.

The state Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy has launched a new webpage with information and resources.

The site includes resources related to how the state responds to wildfire smoke events, and details on how to participate in data collection with your own air quality sensor

So far this year, Michigan’s environmental agency has issued 27 air quality advisories and four alerts. There were 31 alerts in 2023.
