Climate Migration, the Fall Situation, Bay City Restoration

For Friday, Oct. 24, 2025

1 – Climate migration is when people move to escape the effects of climate change. Too many hot days in the summer, or too many wildfires, for instance.

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the UP, might appear to be a great place to move.

But that could be a boom or a burden to UP towns. According to a story in Circle of Blue, populations of small communities such as Houghton have grown steadily in recent decades. During and right after the pandemic, rural regions of Michigan and other Great Lakes states grew faster than rural America as a whole.

A federal study projects that by 2031, rural counties in the Great Lakes region will grow by 1.5 million residents if current trends continue.

2 – Fall colors are peaking in some areas of Michigan and growing in others.

The latest fall color report from Pure Michigan says the Keweenaw Peninsula is at 80 to 100 percent, peaking through Monday, Oct. 27.

The same numbers of 80 to 100 percent are reported in the Petoskey area and West Branch and Crystal Mountain, peaking through Monday, Oct. 27.

The colors are ramping up in Mount Pleasant, at 40-60 percent, and Frankenmuth, at 60-80 percent, peaking by the end of next week.

3 – Bay City has been added to an international Initiative for Resilient Great Lakes Coasts.

The coasts program is a partnership between the U.S.-Canada Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative and the U.S. Office of Coastal Management. The projects are funded by the U.S. Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

Organizers say restoration efforts at Veterans Memorial Park in Bay City are focused on the Davidson Cut, a 600-foot inlet between the park and Kantzler Memorial Arboretum.

The project will create a living shoreline that reduces erosion, improves water filtration, and protects a pedestrian bridge.
