1 – The Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy is looking for volunteers.

The Bay City-based nonprofit says there are opportunities to help plant trees, reclaim vacant land, maintain trails and make a difference.

Individuals, organizations and corporate partners are welcome, the conservancy says

Cleanups and other events are planned for April through September on the conservancy’s website at SBLC-MI.org

They include a cleanup of a vacant lot in Saginaw on Wednesday, April 22, the 50th anniversary of Earth Day

2- Calling all young artists: The Huron-Manistee National Forests are accepting entries for the 2020 Kirtland’s Warbler Young Artists Contest for students in grades K-8.

The contest is the work of the U.S. Forest Service, Huron Pines in Gaylord and other organizations.

It’s intended to teach children about the rare warbler and its habitat.

Entries must be original and demonstrate an understanding of the Kirtland’s warbler or any other creatures that live in northern Michigan’s unique jack pine forests.

A community panel of judges will review entries and notify contest winners before the end of the 2019-2020 school year.

Winners from each grade level will receive a special prize, and their artwork will be displayed at the 2020 Kirtland’s Warbler Festival in Roscommon in June.

Artwork from the contest also may be featured in a calendar produced through a partnership between Huron-Manistee National Forests and Eastern National Forests Interpretive Association.

Entries are due by March 11.
